A Quick Overview of Roofers
A roofer, shingle technician, or roofing contractor generally is a professional tradesman that specializes in repairing, building, and replacing roofs. Roofers often replace, fix, and install the existing roofs of commercial buildings, with a wide range of materials, including asphalt, shingle, bitumen, wood shakes, and synthetic resins. A roofer works closely with engineers and architects, as well as contractors to ensure that the building’s roof and related structures are up to code and safe to be there for the general public.
There are many types of roofs and roof repairs. A basic asphalt shingle roof is made of flat material laid horizontally across a frame made of corrugated iron. The roof is typically made of “pea gravel” or tile and then covered with a thin layer of tar, cement, or asphalt shingles. This roof has been in use for centuries and is still one of the most popular materials used for residential roofing projects.
If your home is not in need of a shingle roof, you may have a more traditional asphalt shingle installed. Although this is an older style, the material is still widely used on residential roofs. A good example of an old-fashioned asphalt shingle is the New York City apartment complex known as the West Side Landing. Originally constructed in the late 1920s, it was destroyed by a tornado in 1969. However, it was renovated and opened to the public again in 1998.
An asphalt shingle roof is commonly made of two pieces of corrugated iron sheets, which are attached together by a strong but flexible joint material. The second sheet, often referred to as a strip, is applied between the first and second pieces so that it is covered by a thicker layer of tar, cement, or asphalt shingles. A single piece of asphalt shingle is attached to the roof in much the same way that roofing tiles are attached to the house itself, with the difference that a single piece is left unglued and does not stick to the roof itself.
A newer style of roofer is made of shingles made from a plastic compound known as polystyrene. It is molded into the shape of various shapes, from triangles to hexagons. and has a wide-open surface that is often referred to as “shingles.” It is covered with a clear layer of tar, cement, tar, or asphalt shingles and the surface is covered with a thick layer of mortar. to keep moisture out. Asphalt shingles can also be placed over the top of asphalt to make a water-resistant roof, although this type of roof is no longer common.
The different types of roofs on your home are designed to perform certain tasks. Some are specifically meant to help block the sun while others are built to keep rain or snow out. Some roofs are used to protect against storms while some are designed to keep the heat in or prevent ice dams from forming.
